Saturday, July 21, 2012

Today was our first class meeting for the Real Estate Construction Management (REAE 5317) course. Dr. Peterson covered the following material from our text book Construction Contracting, a Practical Guide to Company Management through power point presentations:
  • Chapter 1: The Construction Industry
  • Chapter 4: Drawings & Specifications
  • Chapter 5: Cost Estimating & Bidding
  • Chapter 6: Construction Contracts
We learned about a site visit where we will take a tour of Spa Castle in Carrollton. A brand new real estate; should be exciting to find out about the challenges ad outcomes.*

Today was our second class meeting. This summer we met for only these two weeks and rest of the course activity was managed online via online tasks and exams. Dr. Peterson went over the following study materials:
  • Chapter 7: Contract Surety Bonds
  • Chapter 8: Construction Insurance
  • Chapter 11: Project Management and Administration
  • Chapter 12: Project Time Management
Afterwards we took a multiple choice exam on the materials covered so far. The exam didn’t take much long. We headed towards Richmond Construction office for a site visit. Seth Williams, Director of Business Development gave us a tour of the office and later guided us to a construction site in Irving.* We had an interesting insight into construction management regarding dealing with City officials for inspections. Our class session ended after the site visit. As I mentioned before, we have four online tasks and a take home final to finish before the end of the semester.
*For more information on the site visit go to the “Site Visits” post.
